When is Open Enrollment for 2024?

The 2024 Open Enrollment Period (OEP) typically starts November 1, 2023 and concludes January 15, 2024 in most states. Because January 15 is a federal holiday in 2024, OEP will be extended until midnight on January 16 in several states.1

The figure below displays the 2024 OEP dates for states that utilize the federal ACA exchange. Coverage starts on January 1.

If you have a Special Enrollment Period, your coverage will begin on the first of the month following you sign up. For example, if you sign up on February 15, your coverage will begin March 1.

I missed my state’s Open Enrollment deadline. Can I still get healthcare coverage?

If you missed your state’s enrollment deadline, you may still be eligible for a Special Enrollment Period (SEP), which allows you to apply for health insurance.

You may apply for a SEP if you have had a qualifying life event.

Qualifying life events may include:

  • The lack of health insurance due to a job.
  • Marriage, divorce, a family death, or the birth of a child are all examples of household transitions.
  • A change in your residential address.

View a list of eligible life events. You have 60 days to enroll in a plan if you qualify for a SEP. However, if you miss the 60-day deadline, you must wait until OEP to enroll in an individual health insurance coverage for 2024.

If you missed your state’s 2023 Open Enrollment Period and are not eligible for a SEP, you may apply for a short-term health insurance plan.

  • Outside of OEP, you may get short-term health insurance for up to 364 days, and you can renew for it for up to 36 months in 25 states.
  • Short-term health insurance policies serve as a temporary solution for healthy individuals since they do not cover pre-existing diseases and may be subject to medical underwriting.

If you do not qualify for a SEP and choose not to apply for a short-term health plan, you will have to wait until Open Enrollment 2024, which starts in autumn 2023.
